One of the most pleasing aspects of Wollombi, and there are many, is the constant initiatives and innovative changes being made around village. With a dynamic and creative culture there is always something new and interesting in which to participate.
The latest exciting venture is the opening of new Wollombi Village Market to be held on the second Sunday of each month in the main street, from 9am til 3pm. The markets are the brainchild of Juan and John, two local farmers of Spanish origin who are devoted to fresh, handmade, locally grown and produced gourmet food. They farm free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and their farm animals are grass fed and free to roam.
Their partnership, ‘Dos Juans Fine Foods’, manufactures and sells smallgoods which are specially made in small quantities to stringent quality specifications using organically and ethically grown pigs, poultry and trout. Their specific products include salamis, chorizos, jamon, trout and black pudding. In addition they are professional Hunter Valley cheese makers producing every variety from sheep’s cheese, cheddar, camembert, brie, blue, and goat’s cheese.
Juan and Juan arrange and coordinate these markets. The inaugural market was held on Sunday 14 November and the buzz attracted locals, day-trippers, and holiday-makers and the crowds were as enthusiastic as the stall-holders. As well as ‘Dos Juan’s Fine Foods’ being a major draw-card there was also clothing for sale, an extensive range of plants, jewellery, a range of Hunter Valley foods and condiments, and Noyce Brothers Wines available.
Juan and Juan have big ongoing plans for the markets which will grow and diversify even further over time. Meanwhile their endeavour provides for a fun outing and an opportunity to purchase some specialised locally produced high-quality seasonal food and wines.
See you at the next Wollombi Village Market in the Hunter Valley!
